Thank God for Farmers

Seriously, so thankful that there are dedicated farmers who devote their lives to growing our food. My little garden is so much work, and always so much risk from weather and wildlife.

Today I put in two plots of vegetables. Six hours of dumping, mixing, and spreading soil; planting seedlings; and putting together fencing. Phew.

Looking forward to plenty of tomatoes, zucchini, patty pan squash, spaghetti squash, watermelons, corn, green and yellow beans, cow peas, chard, and basil later in the summer. I really hope I get a watermelon this year. The seedlings look a bit better than any I've started in the past, so maybe this is my year. Already harvesting tender, sweet radishes, parsley, cilantro, sage, thyme, and lettuce. I lost my first strawberry to some local critter, but placed the netting over them today, so hopefully I'll get most of the rest. Hopefully I won't find a chipmunk tangled in the netting. Several white berries on the plants now. Patience, patience! And, beets, Brussels sprouts, kale, and peas coming in the next couple of weeks.

Plenty of flowers in the ever-changing display. Always something new in bloom. These days the spirea, autumn wine ninebark, garden phlox, irises, pyracantha, ageratum, bachelor buttons, Queen Anne's lace, weigela, azaleas (back yard), and peonies are showing off. Knock out roses are back after another rough winter. Lots of pruning yet to do, but I've cleaned up the pair by the back door (sorry, garbage guys, lots of thorns in tomorrow's pick up).
