Bursting into Bloom

The first harbingers of spring are on the way out -- crocuses are gone here, daffodils are starting to fade, snowdrops are done, too -- as the next round of flowering plants takes over.

First up, the pink flowering almond. Full and beautiful this year! Maybe I should get another one to put on the other side of the crab apple where the scotch broom gave up last year...

Next, the world's weirdest apple tree. Lovely blossoms, to be sure, but check out the lean.

Yes, that's the way it grows. It has bent over a bit more each year, but just keeps on growing.

Cool weather crops are starting. There are little tiny beet plants coming up in there, really. Planted seeds on Easter Sunday.

Brussels sprouts and kale in here.

Lettuce here. Black-seeded Simpson and a mesclun mix. Yummy salads on the way!

Radishes.

Peas! Glorious peas!

Other plants are greening up all over the yard. I'll take the allergies in trade for the opportunity to enjoy the spring renewal.

Hostas. Slowly spreading, yay!

The baby lilac from the neighbor's start. She showed me one in her yard today where the lilac is pushing out a blooming branch from the root. Nature is determined.

Peonies budding. Waiting for the ants to slurp up the sticky juice on the buds to open them into gorgeous flowers.

New growth on the way for the birds nest spruce. Note the bright light green buds on the branch tips.

Lily of the valley. Thank you Leslie.

Sweet woodruff. Slowly spreading in the shade garden.

Spring 2015

Cool and wet weather makes for slow work in the yard, but finally the cool-weather seeds are in: Lettuce, green onions, beets, Brussels sprouts, kale, radishes, and peas.

Easter Sunday was sunny, but not overly warm, so a perfect day for planting. Now, just the following Saturday, some seeds are already sprouting.

Meanwhile, spring flowers and buds are out all over the place. Crocuses and snowdrops--the first flowers of spring--are already spent. But they were lovely, and so welcome after the winter gloom. Here are some:

The pussy willow has gone from kitten-soft puffs to wild fluffy ones.

With a robin watching over it all...

Daffodils, hyacinths, tulips, forsythia, and grape hyacinths have replaced the crocuses.

And waiting on deck, oak leaf hydrangeas, sedum, peonies, and pink flowering almond.
