Hazelnut Project

I recently received three hazelnut tree seedlings as part of the Arbor Day Foundation's Hazelnut Project. Given the small size of the trees, I've planted them in pots for their first summer here. So far, two of the three have leaves. Meanwhile, I'm in the process of preparing a planting area for them where I'll transplant them in the fall.

Hazelnuts come from trees? I guess I never really thought about it! In 40 years, you'll have excellent homemade flavored coffee. :-)

Well, I'm not much for coffee, but I do like hazelnuts! Elaina gave me some berry bushes for my birthday, so I will have raspberries someday, too. And their are little apples forming on one of my apple trees. If I can just keep the worms out of them, I'll have Gala's in the fall!

This is an older post of yours, but I wonder how your hazelnuts did? I just got some myself from the Arbor Day Society and was thinking about potting them up as you did. Did they end up doing well?

They are doing okay. Still small, but they are budding out again this spring. Rabbits tend to nibble at the branches, so that doesn't help. I need to keep up with spreading deer scram around them for protection. I just got a few more in the mail, my third installment, I think. I'll have to get a new picture up soon. Right now the bed where I have them is full of hyacinths!
